Tarzino continued to receive huge support in 2015 Victoria Derby betting markets and did his chance of success no hard when jumping well and settling in prime position on the heels of early leaders Colonel Custer, Shards, Ayers Rock and Palace Tycoon rounding onto the back straight.

Receiving a dream run in transit on the rails with cover, jockey Craig Newitt allowed the Tavistock gelding ample time to balance upon reaching the final straight before mounting their final assault.

Immediately responding when asked for an extra effort, Tarzino pulled out and comfortably took up the running with 300m to contest; opening the gap and eventually finding the line a comfortable two length ahead of Godolphin runner Etymology.

Newitt completed a perfectly-timed performance to guide Tarzino to success in the 2015 Victoria Derby and was thrilled to deliver trainer Mick Price the win.

“He’s just an out and out stayer, he has class written all over him and he just gave me the perfect ride today,” Newitt said after crossing the line.

“Mick and I have had criticism for the way we’ve been riding him but he’s not a push-button horse to ride.

“He just put himself in the right spot today. We got to the top of the straight and I had a lap full of horse.”

Price was thrilled to saddle his first winner in the Victoria Derby at Flemington this afternoon and is confident the horse will continue to develop into a serious weight-for-age contestant over 2000m in seasons to come.

“It turned out pretty well,” Price said.

“I was a little bit nervous because he pulled for the first half-mile but it was good for Craig – he always wanted to get him off heels and get in clear running at the top of the straight.

“At the top of the straight he was the one you wanted to be on but he was going to hit the front to early and it was a long way up the straight so I was looking for the post but he was just too strong.

“He was in front a long way out but he’s a really, really good horse with a lot of capacity to him.

“He can go to the paddock now and is going to be a grouse horse in the autumn. I think he’s going to make a weight-for-age 2000m horse so as a four-year-old he’ll be fantastic.

“Just as a horse himself, he’s all there.”
