2015 Victoria Derby Final Field and Barrier Draw

October 28th, 2015

A talented and capacity field of sixteen plus one emergency has been confirmed for Saturday’s featured 2015 Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m); highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Carnival’s most exciting three-year-olds.

Tarzino savaged the line for third in the line for third in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) last weekend and appears as though he will relish a step-up to 2500m for the 2015 Victoria Derby on Saturday.

Finishing outside the first three only once in five career starts so far, Tarzino debuted to racing for a credible third in a Pakenham minor over 1380m on July 5th before taking out each of the Slick Pix Maiden (1400m) and The Cove Hotel Handicap (1600m) in succession.

Boxing on for a credible seventh in Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), the Tavistock colt has responded well to each step-up in distance thus far and has been confirmed to be partnered by Craig Newitt in the 2015 Victoria Derby.

Perth raider Kia Ora Koutou undoubtedly faces his biggest task to date in the 2015 Victoria Derby, but is yet to taste anything but success in four starts and is a leading chance for success on Saturday.

Debuting to racing for an impressive two-and-a-half length success in the Vale Ian Loxton Maiden (1400m) on August 27th, Kia Ora Koutou continued to dominate his own age group through two proceeding successes, but booked his ticket east with an ease win over open company in the Crown Perth BM72 (2200m) on October 3rd.

Young hoop Joe Azzopardi has been confirmed to retain the ride on the Blackfriars gelding, who is sure to lay a great account for himself in the feature race.

Lizard Island and Shards have each posted impressive black type results through the 2015 Spring Carnival and have been confirmed in the 2015 Victoria Derby final field.

Running second in the key form indicating Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m) on September 12th, Lizard Island posted a maiden race win in the Evergreen Charity Raceday Maiden (1600m) before running on for a close second behind in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Having placed second in Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) last time out, the Sebring colt gives the impression he will have no issue in getting the 2500m of the 2015 Victoria on Saturday.

Shards has contested an up-and-down Spring Carnival preparation but appears to be peaking in form at the opportune moment for success in the Victoria Derby.

Winning the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) on August 22nd, the Medaglia D’Oro colt failed to fire when seventh in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) but responded well when second in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) a fortnight later on September 25th.

While again unable to figure in the Caulfield Guineas, Shards ran a solid second in the Moonee Valley Vase last weekend and is primed for another big performance on Saturday.

South Australian Colonel Custer was unlucky to be blocked for a run when seventh in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) last week, but will relish a step-up to 2500m in the Victoria Derby, while David Hayes and Tom Dabernig are offered a resounding chance of success in Geelong Classic winner Extra Choice.
