2015 Victoria Derby the Target for Ragnaar

August 21st, 2015

Trainer Lee Freedman is thrilled to have added Ragnaar to his stable for the upcoming Spring Racing Carnival and believes the talented New Zealand import is showing all the signs of a legitimate 2015 Victoria Derby (2500m) contender.

Having started his career under the guidance of the Pukekohe-based Nigel Tiley, Ragnaar is yet to post a race win in two competitive starts but is also yet to finish outside the first three.

Having won the Victoria Derby three times previously via Mahogany (1993), Portland Player (1996) and Benicio (2005), Freedman is confident the form and class displayed by the exciting three-year-old in work points towards legitimate progression to the 2015 Victoria Derby.

“This is a horse who’s got the pedigree – he’s equipped to do the trip and he’s had the perfect little light two-year-old preparation,” Freedman told Racing Ahead.

“He’s doing so well in the stable, I’d be surprised if we don’t get a long way down the track with him.

“He trials next Friday and will probably go to a maiden about a week, 10 days after that.

“He’s perfectly placed because he’s had the two runs as a two-year-old, which is one of my formulas, don’t have too many runs as a two-year-old.

“Has staying potential, looks a very set horse, settled straight into the stable here.

“In a perfect world, we’re going to go 1400m straight to a mile in town and then probably to the (Caulfield Classic) or through another avenue to the (Moonee Valley) Vase and the Derby.”

Jumping from the gates well in the Racing At Avondale Maiden (1200m) on debut in May, Ragnaar settled in prime position within the field of six; producing a good turn of foot to finish a close second behind Massa Lu.

Making a competitive transition to black type racing, the Roc De Cambes gelding was unlucky to be caught wide during the running of the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes (1400m) on May 23rd but recovered well enough to finish third.
