A leading chance for success in this weekend’s feature race at Flemington, classy three-year-old Bachman has been ruled out of the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) following a training mishap at Caulfield on Wednesday morning.
Steadily building to the task over four starts this time in, Bachman was reportedly working on a walker at Caulfield on Wednesday morning when a minor incident occurred leaving the son of All American with a laceration on his leg.
Confirming the colt has not sustained any long-term damage from the incident, trainer Gerald Ryan said Bachman is yet to undergo a full veterinary check but will not be able to take his place in the 2014 Victoria Derby.
“It is all superficial but it is not ideal,” Ryan told TVN.
“He might have got the tendon just under his hock at this stage hopefully it isn’t anything too serious apart from meaning he will miss the Derby.”
Securing two race wins and a further two minor places from his nine competitive appearances so far, Bachman debuted with a credible run for fourth in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on February 15th before placing third behind the likes of Group 1-placed Scratch Me Lucky in the Australian Turf Club 2.y.o (1200m0 on March 5th.
Continuing to impress in winning both the TAB Ipad App Maiden (1300m) and Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) back-to-back before a luckless run for ninth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th closed his maiden preparation, Bachman was blocked for run and 12th in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) first-up this time in before placing fourth in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m).
Reacting favourably to the continued step-up in distance when third behind Victoria Derby favourite Hampton Court in the Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) and sixth in the Caulfield Classic (2000m) last time out, Bachman occupied the fifth line of betting for success in the 2014 Victoria Derby prior to his scratching at Ladbrokes.com.au.
