Charging home to finish a close second in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) last time out on October 22nd, trainer Chris Waller is confident classy colt Preferment is in the right form to break through for a maiden race win in this weekend’s featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Racecourse.
Settling at the rear of the field following only a fair jump in the Geelong Classic, Preferment was forced to work for a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight but displayed a keen turn of foot to finish just off the pace of winner Nozomi.
Finishing second three times over his six race career and third in one other event, Waller believes Preferment’s bloodline, recent form and the running conditions of the major staying event for three-year-olds will see his runner become the first since Redding in 1992 to secure a maiden race win in the Victoria Derby.
“Preferment will enjoy Flemington, he needs the big track as it will help the race unfold for him,” Waller told The Daily Telegraph.
“He’s still a maiden but his Geelong run was very good. He’s a really promising horse and just getting it worked out now.
“He’s by the right stallion in Zabeel for the Derby, too.”
Finishing a luckless seventh in the Equiano King Of Speed Handicap (900m) on debut in July, Preferment finished third in the Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap (1300m) on July 13th before running a close second in each of the Testa Rossa @ Vinery Handicap (1400m) and More Than Ready Plate (1550m).
Having finished fourth amongst classy competition in the Shop With The TAB App Plate (1600m) in his only other start prior to the Geelong Classic, Preferment is currently available at generous odds of $6 for success in Victoria Derby betting markets, figuring as sole occupant of the second line of betting with Ladbrokes.com.au.
