Busuttin Eyeing 2014 Victoria Derby for Young Pair

August 5th, 2014

Having experienced success in the 2011 edition of the Group 1 feature via notable stayer Sangster, trainer Trent Busuttin has revealed he may target the 2014 Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) with young pair Johnhro and Atmosphere.

One of New Zealand’s leading trainers in partnership with Natalie Young, Busuttin has saddled Johnhro in just one competitive event so-far; a commendable second to Southern Icon in the Redwood Challenge Maiden (800m) at Ruakaka on May 21st.

Confirming Johnhro will be included in nominations for the 2014 Victoria Derby, Busuttin conceded the exciting three-year-old will have to impress early in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival to warrant a position in the Group 1 feature.

“Johnhro is a nice Lonhro horse that was a good thing beaten first-up as a two-year-old and he is another horse that we will throw in the noms for some nice races and see how we go,” Busuttin told Racing Ahead.

Yet to appear on course competitively, Busuttin said he has been pleased with the way Atmosphere has taken to work ahead of his maiden racing preparation, and believes all signs point towards the three-year-old figuring as a serious Derby contender.

“On pedigree and type he looks like a Derby horse,” Busuttin said.

“Obviously there is a long way to go to that, but we will throw in a nom, bring him over and kick him off somewhere easy and see how where we end up.”

Planning on bringing several of his stable’s stars to Melbourne for the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Busuttin said former Victoria Derby champion Sangster is a little behind in current preparations, but should be ready to go when lining up for a trial in three weeks.

“He is probably a little bit behind the others at this stage, but he is due to trial up in about three weeks and we will give him a run or two over in New Zealand and if he can perform well enough he will be on a plane to join the others,” Busuttin added.
