Trainer John O’Shea believes that a decent barrier will be the key to Savvy Nature beating Complacent in the $1.5 million Victoria Derby at Flemington this Saturday November 2, 2013.
O’Shea is hoping that Savvy Nature can draw barrier one to seven for the race.
“I think that if we are going to win, the barriers are going to be vital,” O’Shea said.
“The two times we’ve met him (Complacent), we’ve had to give him a big start.
“We just need to draw a gate where we can sort of get within striking distance in the run so that we are not setting our self too great a task.”
Savvy Nature placed third behind Complacent at their last meeting in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes, after finishing a close second to him in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes.
O’Shea watched Complacent work at Flemington this morning and admits the horse looked exceptional.
“One of the first things I saw this morning was him coming off the track bouncing,” O’Shea said.
“He’s obviously feeling very good. Peter will have him trained to the minute.
“He’ll be well ridden and well prepared, so we’re going to have to really step up to the plate if we want to win.”
The trainer still believes Savvy Nature is capable of winning if everything goes to plan.
“He’s been set for one race and right at the moment it seems to be right on track,” he said.
