San Diego remains on a path towards the Group 1 Victoria Derby, which will run at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday November 2, 2013.
The Exceed And Excel colt placed sixth in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes behind Divine Calling last start, however, trainer Paul Snowden expects him to be more competitive over longer distances.
Snowden admits that an Exceed And Excel stayer is not something that you see every day.
“Yeah, I guess he’d have to defy the way he is bred,’’ Snowden said.
“Although he tends to throw more to his dam, who is a Zabeel mare.’’
It also isn’t often that you see a Darley horse in the Group 1 Victoria Derby, with second place-getter Induna the only previous runner to come out of the Darley-Snowden partnership.
“The way the Darley system works is with a large emphasis on the two-year-olds, into three, and an emphasis on the sprints,’’ Snowden said.
“Once a lot of them turn three, they’re off and gone (to stud or Europe).
“So I guess it’s nice to have a legitimate Derby contender.’’
San Diego has won two of his five race starts and has earned more than $87,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
He is also nominated for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse on October 12, 2013.
