Run over 2,500 metres, it takes a true stayer with early maturity to run out the distance.

However, trainer David Hayes feels like he may have found the right horse in Honey’s Steel Gold.

Honey’s Steel Gold has won two of his six race starts and has earned more than $84,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

The Keep The Faith gelding won the $121,000 Listed Taj Rossi Series Final at Flemington Racecourse on July 6, 2013.

This win came just two weeks after his debut victory in the $17,500 Procon Developments Plate at Cranbourne last month.

Hayes feels that Honey’s Steel Gold may have what it takes to run out the 2,500 metres in the Group 1 Victoria Derby in November.

“It’s a long way off, but if everything goes right, he’s the sort of colt you’d consider for that sort of race,” he said.

Tony Vasil’s The Bowler finished second to Honey’s Steel Gold in their last start and is another likely contender for the 2013 Victoria Derby.

The Bowler has won two of his six race runs and has earned more than $80,000 in prize money.
