Trainer Peter Gelagotis is confident Hvasstan can win the 2012 Victoria Derby at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday November 3, 2012.
Hvasstan has won three of his six race starts and has earned more than $175,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
The Fastnet Rock colt won his most recent race start in the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse on October 20, 2012.
Prior to that run, the galloper places second to Philippi in the Listed UCI Stakes at Flemington earlier this month.
Hvasstan will now look to win his first Group 1 race in the $1.5 million Victoria Derby this weekend.
Gelagotis feels that Hvasstan is at his career best prior to the 2012 Victoria Derby.
“I’d say he can’t really work any better than that,” Gelagotis said.
“He worked through his paces and breezed up in good time.
“To be honest that’s probably the best he’s ever, ever worked.
“I hope that’s not a bad sign, as he’s normally pretty lazy and laid back.
“There’s no point getting carried away but you couldn’t as for him to do much more.”
It will be the first time the young colt has run the 2,500 metre distance, however, he proved he was up to the task of being a stayer with his last start win over 2,000 metres.
