Major Post will have to be at his best if he wants to win the 2012 Victoria Derby at Tabcorp Melton this Saturday February 4, 2012.
The gelding has drawn a back row barrier for the 2012 Victoria Derby, which will make for a tough race.
Trainer Chris Robinson believes Major Post will still have a chance to win the $200,000 race.
“It makes it a lot tougher race to win off the second row but then again it takes the pressure off a bit too,” Robinson said.
“We are just going to need them to run the race upside down so that the front runners get tired and those at the back can swoop late, the draw is actually quite interesting because the two favourites have both drawn the second line as well so it is not going to be your typical derby.”
The four-year-old won his 2012 Victoria Derby heat last Friday night and will be looking to past the post first again this Saturday.
“He was second up last week but he had a pretty easy run in transit and it didn’t knock him around at all,” Robinson said.
“He has eaten really well since and I couldn’t have him any better.”
The trainer admitted he was initially reluctant to run Major Park in the 2012 Victoria Derby.
“I wasn’t really sure whether I would go down to Victoria and compete in the Derby heats because I didn’t think Major Post was ready for it, he has shown plenty of ability but he is still growing physically and mentally and in the end it was Blake Fitzpatrick who convinced me to nominate him,” he said.
Major Post will go into the 2012 Victoria Derby with five wins from seven starts to his name and prize money of more than $37,000.
