Sangster is the 2011 Victoria Derby champion after saluting in one of the roughest run races in the event’s history.
It keeps up the trend of short priced favourites struggling in the race with Manawanui simply not running the trip after no complaints during the run.
Sangster hardly had the run of the race, he was caught three wide from an outside draw and had little choice but to push forward.
The other horses used him as a shield to try and run themselves into the race and at the top of the straight they were lining up to take him on.
Manawanui did take the lead as they straightened but it wasn’t long before Sangster loomed up on his outside.
They were in a battle themselves about 400m out but Sangster simply dropped the favourite and went clear in front.
It was then up to something else to launch from the pack and Induna did the job flying home in the final 200m.
He had a huge amount of ground to make up but with 100m to go he was closing and closing fast.
He got to him on the line but fell a head short leaving Sangster as the 2011 Victoria Derby champion.
He paid a healthy $15.2 with online bookmaker Luxbet representing a mountain of value for the punters.
Induna was a brave second at $2.10 with Sabrage working well late at $3.80.
Zabeelionaire was a huge run form last on the turn to end up coming home in fourth spot.
Manawanui was behind that pack as his campaign no doubt comes to an end.
For Sangster though, the connections, kiwi trainer Trent Busuttin and jockey Hugh Bowman it was a tremendous victory and there will no doubt be long celebrations after Sangster won the 2011 Victoria derby.
