Olly’ Shooting For Fourth Victoria Derby Title In 2011

October 19th, 2011

Damien Oliver knows what it takes to win Group 1 races and when it comes to the Victoria Derby he knows it better than just about anyone.

In fact when he arrives at Flemington for the 2011 Victoria Derby on Saturday week he’ll be aiming to win it for a fourth time.

The horse he’ll be relying on is Sabrage, a colt he’s already won in the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.

Oliver will partner the horse again for trainer Michael Moroney who’s more than keen to keep up the winning combination.

Oliver’s love affair with the Victoria Derby started back in 1992 when he first won it aboard Redding.

There was a big gap after that until he once again got up, this time on Amalfi in 2001.

The next break was nowhere near as long, just two years before Elvstroem succeeded in 2003.

In between those wins he’s also come close on a number of occasions finishing second on Centro, Naturalism and Sky Heights.

Moroney is also no stranger to Victoria Derby success, he won in 2009 with Monaco Consul after breaking his duck back in 1997 with Second Coming.

He says he’s confident of bagging a third in the 2011 Victoria Derby.

“He’s pulled up really well and Ollie said he was a horse that can be ridden anywhere in the field and that he should have no trouble with the extra distance,” Moroney said.

Sabrage is currently a $8.50 chance for the 2011 Victoria Derby with online bookmaker Luxbet.
