2011 Victoria Derby On The Internationals Hit-List

August 5th, 2011

The 2011 Victoria Derby is one of a number of Melbourne spring racing carnival Group 1’s to be pinpointed by international raiders in their bid for Australian success this year.

Along with the Victoria Derby is the Patinack Farm Classic,Coolmore Stud Stakes and as always the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

One of the biggest imports to hit our shores this year will be Society Rock, the Godolphin runner on target for the Patinack Farm Classic and a showdown with the unbeaten Aussie wonder mare Black Caviar.

Society Rock is fresh off a win in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and in line for the $600,000 bonus on offer for winners of a global sprint challenge event.

Black Caviar won the race last year by a clear four length margin and this is likely to be her first major test against top level overseas competition.

In the Coolmore Stud Stakes it will be a Hong Kong import who tries to steal the show, Bear Hero locked in for a shot at the $1 million prize.

He is fresh off his crowning as champion two year old of Hong Kong and will battle our best three year olds on our soil.

This means that the 2011 Victoria Derby is well and truly on the cards and along with it a potential clash with our two year old champion Sepoy.

Bear Hero is at this stage unbeaten and given Sepoy has lost just once on a heavy track it could create one of the greatest Victoria Derby’s in history.

Racing Victoria is understandably thrilled with the quality they’ve managed to attract thus far and especially that they’ve spread the pool of talent across races other than just the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

“It has been a focus of Racing Victoria and the VRC to further promote the Spring Racing Carnival abroad and thus we are delighted to receive entries from these three international sprinters,” Jordon said.

“Society Rock is a class act having won the famous Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June after finishing runner-up to Starspangledbanner in the same race 12 months prior.

“Godolphin has committed to this year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup and we would be delighted if they saw fit to bring Delegator along to compete in the Patinack Farm Classic at the same time.

“Delegator is a very smart horse when on song. He’s a multiple Group 1 placegetter and he’s effective up to a mile so he’d be suited by a strong 1200-metres up the Flemington straight.

“I’m particularly excited about the entry from Bear Hero, who is an Australian-bred colt that is unbeaten in three starts and who has run some blistering times in his victories at Sha Tin.”
