An early Group 1 Victoria derby chance may have been found however it’s too soon to say if he’ll even target the race let alone win it.
Mike Moroney unveiled the second of his future staying prospects at Brisbane today in a seemingly innocuous maiden which could have a big impact.
In the Padua College Maiden Plate over 1200m Devonshire Duke stepped onto the race track for the very first time.
He gave the leader a fair bit of ground but pulled it back nicely over the final stages and just caught him on the line to beat home One Green Bottle by a narrow margin.
The two year old is sired by Keeper out of Bexley and will return home to Victoria with his promise now clearly shown.
Moroney says he’s excited by his latest batch of two year olds and he has high hopes for success.
“We buy four yearlings we hope will make stayers each year and this is the second one to run,” Moroney said.
He indicated that the 2011 Victoria Derby could well be on the cards but he refused to commit either way.
“I might head south with him to Melbourne for the spring and he’d make a nice Derby horse down there,” he said.
“But I’ve got the feeling he might be more of an autumn horse and he could well go back home for a spell.”
