Rekindled Interest Claims Favouritism in 2010 Victoria Derby Betting

October 25th, 2010

Jim Conlan’s impressive three-year-old Rekindled Interest secured the spot at the top of the 2010 Victoria Derby odds after a brilliant win in the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley over the weekend.

On Saturday, Redoute’s choice gelding Rekindled Interest enjoyed a superb form turnaround to storm home to win the AAMI Vase by two and a half lengths over Lion Tamer and Hollowlea.

Rekindled Interest is now the $3.20 Victoria Derby favourite at Luxbet so get behind them now before odds shorten with the final field announced on Wednesday

The win followed two unlucky runs at Caulfield where Rekindled Interest finished fifth to Anacheeva in both the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and the Caulfield Guineas.

After his easy victory in the AAMI Vase, the traditional Derby lead-up, bookmakers across the country slashed their price on Rekindled Interest to win the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m), held this Saturday at Flemington on the first Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting.

Luxbet now have Rekindled Interest at $3.20 to win, cut from $7, replacing previous favourite Retrieve who has eased out to $3.60.

The Peter Snowden-trained Retrieve last raced on October 16 winning the Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield, and should be fresh and well-rested for the Derby on Saturday.

AAMI Vase runner-up Lion Tamer is currently paying $13 to back up with a win in the Victoria Derby, while third placegetter Hollowlea will be spelled ahead of the autumn where the Stutt Stakes winning colt will target the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in March.

Other three-year-olds at the top of the Victoria Derby betting markets at Luxbet are Norman Robinson Stakes’ second and third placegetters Almindoro ($8.50) and Digital Fortress ($9), Smokin’ Joey ($9) and Shadowofexcellence ($12).

Of the early favourites, the Lee Freedman-trained Smokin’ Joey was the only other horse to run at Moonee Valley’s Cox Plate Day on Saturday, when the Encosta De Lago colt finished a disappointing 11th in the AAMI Vase 14 lengths back from Rekindled Interest after starting as the odds-on favourite.

Freedman will add a tongue tie to Smokin’ Joey for the Derby after jockey Nash Rawiller said the colt swallowed his tongue and choked in the AAMI Vase.
