Update: The 2011 Victoria Derby betting odds are now posted on Races.com.au.
The Peter Snowden-trained Retrieve is now the odds-on favourite to win the 2010 Victoria Derby on October 30 after a reshuffle of the betting markets for the classic three-year-olds’ showdown following the withdrawal of Anacheeva.
Leading online bookie Sportsbet opened their ante-post markets for the $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) in late September, but following the race results from the past fortnight Retrieve has shortened into the clear favourite.
Rahy colt Retrieve started at $8.50 in the Derby betting, but has had his price slashed into $5 following an eye-catching second to Erewhon in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 2.
In big Victoria Derby news, Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva has been ruled out of a run in the Derby.
Trainer Peter Moody has made the decision to either spell the brilliant Anabaa colt ahead of an autumn campaign, or possibly target the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby Day stepping Anacheeva back down to 1200m.
Previous favourite in the Victoria Derby betting Altius, originally at the top of the markets paying $5.50, has drifted out to $13 following the Tony Vasil-trained Redoute’s Choice colt finishing a disappointing fifth in the Listed UCI Stakes at Flemington on October 3.
The horse that beat Altius in the UCI Stakes, Eclair Surprise has been the biggest mover in the markets.
Originally outside the top 25 Victoria Derby hopefuls, Peter Moody’s Eclair Surprise was paying over $30 to win in the early markets at Sportsbet but has had massive money come in for them now the $9 third favourite.
With Anacheeva ruled out of a Derby campaign, Eclair Surprise is now Moody’s top hope to take out the major Melbourne Cup Carnival feature.
UCI Stakes runner-up Almindoro has also shortened dramatically in the Victoria Derby markets, now paying $11 to win.
The biggest drifter in the Victoria Derby odds has been Peter Snowden’s Giresun, moving out from $11 to $41 after failing in the Spring Champaign Stakes finishing sixth.
First declarations for the 2010 Victoria Derby will be taken next Tuesday October 19 at noon, narrowing down the list of horses heading towards the feature.
