Snowden Considers Retrieve for 2010 Victoria Derby

August 30th, 2010

Up-and-coming stayer Retrieve could possibly target the $1.5million Victoria Derby this Melbourne Cup Carnival after the three-year-old claimed an impressive win at Sandown last week.

Trained by premier Flemington mentor Peter Snowden, the son of Rahy scored an easy victory over 1500m  in the Abdul Super VOBIS Handicap last Tuesday earning himself a berth in the Group races this spring.

Options for Retrieve now include either staying in Melbourne for a 1700m race or going to Sydney for the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill on September 18.

If Retrieve runs well in the Gloaming Stakes, where he is likely to start as one of the Ladbrokes.com.au favourites, Snowden will then head towards the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes on October 2 at Randwick and possibly even the 2010 Victoria Derby at Flemington on October 30.

The Gloaming Stakes has been an excellent indication for punters in later spring features over the years, with last year’s winner So You Think continuing on to win the $3 million Cox Plate.

In other 2010 Victoria Derby news, Bart Cummings’ Savabeel colt Kudakulari could also be on way to run in the three-year-olds classic after his sixth-place finish in Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Rose had all the markings of a Victoria Derby contender.

Nominations for this year’s Victoria Derby will be released on September 21 and published here first so bookmark this page.
