Anacheeva Improves 2010 Victoria Derby Chances with First-Up Win

August 23rd, 2010

Peter Moody’s lightly-raced colt Anacheeva improved their stocks for the 2010 Victoria Derby on Saturday with an impressive first-up win in the Listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley.

A three-year-old son of Anabaa, Anacheeva ($8) was ridden to perfection by Luke Nolen in the McKenzie, the pair able to hold off The Ruffian ($19) and score victory by a head in a race marred by the fall of two jockeys – Danny Brereton (Marquee Player) and Nick Hall (Hollowlea).

Moody is aiming Anacheeva towards both the $1million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 9 and the $1.5million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 30.

Following their win on Saturday, Anacheeva has shortened into the $15 equal fourth favourite in the 2010 Caulfield Guineas betting markets at and is sure to dominate in the Victoria Derby odds when they are released later during the carnival.

Anacheeva is a full brother to 2005 Victoria Derby third placegetter Benecio, who also won the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby the following year, with Moody hoping the promising youngster can improve on his brother’s performance.

“He’s a very nice colt and we’re giving him the chance of chasing a Derby just like his brother Headturner…so that was very pleasing,” said Moody.

A winner of two of their four career starts to date, Anacheeva was purchased by Moody for $100,000 at the Sydney Easter Sales.

The Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 18 has been pencilled in as Anacheeva’s next up start on way to the 2010 Victoria Derby.

In other 2010 Victoria Derby news, unbeaten colt Altius also improved their chances for a berth in the three-year-olds classic with a win in the Geelong Milk Class 1 Handicap (1300m) over the weekend.

The Tony Vasil-trained son of Redoute’s Choice has now won both of their starts and is a half brother to Victoria Derby winner Elvstroem.

Vasil commented that the Victoria Derby is the main target for Altius and expects the colt to improve as he steps up in distance during the spring.

Nominations for the Victoria Derby close on September 21 and we will be first to publish the list of hopeful three-year-olds so bookmark this page.
