David Payne’s little-known colt Praecido may have been outclassed in the 2010 The Run to The Rose on Saturday, but is looking a top chance for the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m) this November.
Three-year-old One Cool Cat colt Praecido ran a gallant fifth to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Squamosa in the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Praecido’s more famous stablemate Masquerader, previously unbeaten, was an unlucky second in The Run To The Rose.
The performance has likely earned Praecido a trip to Victoria for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, with the 2010 Victoria Derby on Saturday October 30 as his primary target.
Praecido has won just one race from his eight career starts, but Payne still holds the colt in high regard and considers him a genuine spring contender and a good horse to back in the Ladbrokes.com.au markets.
Payne is looking at the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 2 for Praecido on way towards a tilt in the feature three-year-olds showdown of the year, the Victoria Derby.
